DR EATON’S KEYS TO GOOD SLEEP

INGREDIENTS

Melatonin
Melatonin is an important natural hormone that assists in many bodily functions.  It’s peak production is during the dark hours of the night.  In sleep disturbance it has been found to be effective 80% of the time.  Melatonin not only advances sleep time (difficulty going to sleep) but increases duration of sleep as well.

Melatonin is a safe inexpensive and very effective treatment of sleep-wake cycle disorders.

Melatonin is produced within the pineal gland (located in central area of the brain) from tryptophane via of a pathway involving seratonin.  Melatonin acts as the central processing neuro-hormone of complex interactions integrating mind, body and the environment.  Melatonin is also produced by peripheral tissue such as retina and gastro-intestinal tract.  Melatonin is naturally present in some foods such as grapes, walnuts, rice but in small quantities..

5 HTP
5 HydroxyTryptophan is produced by the body by conversion from the amino acid L-Tryptophan.  5 HTP is available commercially from the seeds of a West African medicinal plant (Griffonia Simplicifolia).  Tryptophan and 5 HTP are precursors to Seratonin production, a neurotransmitter.  Serotonin levels in the brain affect sleep, mood, anxiety, tension, body temperatures, appetite, sexual behavior and pain perception.  Some 5HTP is converted to melatonin by the pineal gland that controls the sleep cycle.  Serotonin deficiency has been linked to insomnia and other sleep disorders.

Valerian
Valerian is a leading herb used for insomnia.  It is taken to relieve anxiety, has a calming benefits and promote restful sleep.  Valerian is most effective when used continuously rather than as an acute sleep aid.  The advantage of valeria is the fact that it does not cause daytime sleepiness, impaired concentration, or diminished physical performance.

L-Theanine
An amino acid found in green tea that promotes relaxation, a sense of calmness in the anxiety prone individual.  L-Theanine does not act as sedation but it does help improve sleep quality.  L-Theanine is a good support ingredient for melatonin and 5 HTP when used as a sleep aid.

Vitamin B-6
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) performs a wide variety of functions in the body and essential for good health Vitamin B6 is needed for more than 100 enzymes involved in protein metabolism.  It is essential for conversion of tryptophan and 5HTP to Serotonin.
The nervous and immune systems need Vitamin B6 to carry out their essential functions.

Magnesium
The anti-stress mineral, Magnesium, is a natural tranquilizer that relaxes muscles.  Magnesium helps with sleep tranquility and reduces leg cramps.  It also helps in pre-menstrual symptoms and is a good diabetic supplement.
